Why your child goes blank in the maths exam even though they knew it at home

Your child revised. They did the sums at home and got them right. They walked into the exam reasonably confident. And then they looked at question three and their mind emptied.

Parents usually file this under nerves, and sometimes it is. But in maths specifically there is a more common and more fixable cause, and it is worth ruling out before you treat it as an anxiety problem.

Recognising is not the same as retrieving

When your child revises at home, they usually work through a chapter. Every question on the page is from that chapter. They already know the method before they read the question, because the heading told them.

The exam does not do that. Questions arrive in no particular order, unlabelled, and the first job is to work out what kind of question it is. That is a skill, and revising chapter by chapter never practises it once.

The signal that this is what is happening

You can distinguish this from genuine anxiety with one question, asked after the exam: when you saw question three, did you feel frightened, or did you feel confused?

  • Frightened, heart racing, went blank on everything. That is exam anxiety, and it needs a different kind of help.
  • Confused, did not know where to start, moved on. That is the decision gap. It is a maths-practice problem, not an emotional one.
  • Knew the method but could not remember the formula. That is a memorisation problem, and it usually means the formula was memorised rather than understood, so there was nothing to fall back on.

The third one deserves a note. A student who has understood where a formula comes from can rebuild it when it slips. A student who only memorised it has nothing underneath. This is why understanding is not a luxury for the exam. It is the backup.

The practice that actually fixes it

Three changes, in order of impact:

  1. Mix the chapters. Once a chapter is learned, your child must practise it jumbled with others. A worksheet where consecutive questions come from different chapters is worth several chapter-wise ones, because it forces the identification step every single time.
  2. Practise starting, not finishing. Take ten questions and, for each, have your child write only the first line and why. No solving. Ten minutes, ten repetitions of the exact skill that fails in the exam.
  3. Do at least a few things under a clock. Not everything. But a student who has never once worked against a timer meets that sensation for the first time in the board exam.
