What to do when you look at a maths question and have no idea where to start

You read the question. You read it again. Nothing comes. The page stays empty and the clock keeps going, and somewhere in your head a voice says you are just bad at this.

You are not. What is actually happening is much more specific, and once you see it, it stops being mysterious.

Why your mind goes empty

When your teacher solves a problem on the board, you see them write line 1, line 2, line 3. What you never see is the ten seconds before line 1, where they decided what kind of question it was and which method to use.

That decision is the hard part. It is also the part nobody demonstrates, because it happens silently inside someone else’s head. So you have watched hundreds of solutions and practised the decision approximately zero times.

Good news: it is a skill, which means it can be practised directly. Here is how.

Four questions that unstick almost anything

When you have no idea what to do, do not stare harder. Work through these in order, out loud if you can.

  1. What am I actually being asked to find? Write it down in words at the top of your page. Not the whole question. Just the thing you need. This alone unsticks a surprising number of questions, because half the confusion is not knowing what you are aiming at.
  2. What have I been given? List every number and fact. Underline them in the question. Anything given to you is there for a reason, and if you have not used something by the end, you have probably missed a step.
  3. What does this remind me of? Not “what is the method”, which is too big a question. Just: have I seen anything shaped like this before? A right triangle? Something with an unknown I could call x? A ratio?
  4. What is one thing I could write down that is definitely true?This is the real unlock. You do not need the whole plan. You need one honest line. Once one true line exists, the next one is much easier to see.

Practise the first move on its own

Here is the exercise that fixes this faster than anything else. Take a question and decide only the first move. Do not solve it. Just choose, and find out whether you were right.

Notice that none of these ask you to finish the question. Choosing the first move is a separate skill, and it is the one that decides whether you can start at all.

Ten of those takes about ten minutes and trains the exact skill that fails you in the exam. Ten full solutions takes an hour and trains it three times.

Default first moves worth knowing

For most Class 10 question types there is a reliable opening move. Learn these and you will rarely be completely stuck:

  • A word problem. Name the unknown. Write “let x be ...” and say exactly what it is. Then translate the sentence one piece at a time.
  • Anything with a tangent. Draw the radius to the point of contact. That gives you a right angle, and a right angle gives you Pythagoras or trigonometry.
  • Prove two triangles are similar. Mark the equal angles on the diagram first. The proof usually writes itself once the diagram is marked.
  • A trigonometric identity. Start from the messier side and aim for the simpler one. Reach for sin²θ + cos²θ = 1 early.
  • An equation that is not tidy. Simplify to standard form before deciding anything about it.
  • A sequence. Check whether the gap between terms is constant. If it is, you have an AP and you need a, d and n.

When it happens in the actual exam

Two rules, and the second one matters more than students expect.

Write something. Write what you are given. Draw the diagram. Label it. Method marks exist, and a partly-correct attempt scores more than a blank space. Blank space scores exactly zero, always.

Then move on and come back. Give a question about ninety seconds of genuine attempt. If nothing has come, mark it and go to the next one. Students lose far more marks to time spent frozen on question 12 than to question 12 itself. Your brain also has a habit of solving it quietly in the background while you do something else.

One last thing

If this happens to you a lot, it usually means one of two things, and neither is that you are bad at maths.

Either you have practised watching rather than deciding, which the exercise above fixes. Or there is something from an earlier class that never quite settled, and it is quietly making the new work harder than it should be. That second one is extremely common and completely repairable, and it is worth finding out rather than assuming the worst about yourself.
