Class 10 Maths tough questions

A tough question is usually two or three easy steps joined together. The difficulty is seeing which step comes first. These three new questions are split into those steps so you can make each decision yourself.

Three tough questions to try

Triangles

A Parallel Line With Algebra Sides

DE is parallel to BC in triangle ABC. AD = x + 1, DB = 3x − 1, AE = x + 3, EC = 3x + 4. Find x and AB.

Arithmetic Progressions

Three Numbers From a Sum and a Product

Three numbers are in AP. Their sum is 27 and their product is 693. Find the numbers.

Polynomials

One Zero Is Three Times the Other

One zero of 2x² − 16x + k is three times the other. Find k and both zeroes.

Try it step by step

Each question is split into small steps. If you get stuck, the hints ask you a question that points the way. They never just show you the answer. Every question was written for Young Math Brains and checked twice.

How to break down a tough question

  1. Write down what is given and what is asked before you start. Many tough questions hide one easy fact, such as DE ∥ BC.
  2. Choose names that make the algebra short. For three numbers in an AP, a − d, a and a + d make the sum give a straight away.
  3. If two unknowns are linked, use one letter for both, such as α and 3α for two zeroes.
  4. Use the condition that has only one unknown first. Here the sum of zeroes finds α before the product finds k.
  5. Put your answer back into the question. If the lengths, terms or zeroes do not fit, find the step that went wrong.
