A note for the parent

What your child had to do in this Pair of Linear Equations in Two Variables problem

This was not a watch-and-copy exercise. The student had to make 7 small mathematical decisions and correct any wrong turns before moving forward.

The skill being built

Reasoning, not answer recognition

Place value turns the digits into 10x+y10x + y and 10y+x10y + x. “Differ by 22” does not say which digit is larger, so it gives two equations, x−y=2x - y = 2 or y−x=2y - x = 2, and both cases must be solved.

The mistake we watch for

A wrong answer is useful evidence

Writing only x−y=2x - y = 2, as if the tens digit had to be the larger one, and so finding 4242 but losing 2424.

What happens when a step goes wrong?

The choice is crossed out

The app does not pretend the mistake did not happen.

The reason is explained

The child sees the exact misconception behind that choice.

The child tries again

The app guides, but the student still makes the next decision.
